KINGSTON, ON (Jan 5, 2016) The Kingston Youth Shelter, with financial support from the United Way KFLA, has taken an additional step in their efforts to end youth homelessness in the KFL&A region.
Beginning in December 2015, the Kingston Youth Shelter launched their new family support worker position. This position looks to help prevent youth from entering the homelessness system by addressing family breakdown, youth/parent conflict, and general communication difficulties that may leave youth at a greater risk of entering homelessness.
The formation of this new position comes from feedback presented in the United Way KFLA’s 2014 shared community plan to End Homelessness in Kingston & Area that identified family conflict as being a leading cause of youth homelessness in the KFL&A region.
‘Year after year our statistics have always shown – close to 1/3 of our residents leave the shelter to return home or with an extended family member. If we can prevent these youth from ever entering the shelter in the first place, we have gone a long way to ending youth homelessness in the KFL&A region’ said Jason Beaubiah, the Executive Director of the Kingston Youth Shelter.
This new position marks another step forward in the collective effort of countless local agencies that are working toward shared long-term initiatives – lead by the United Way KFLA – to help end youth homelessness in the region.
