FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Registration open for second annual Pickleball United
Friendly tournament raises funds for United Way
KINGSTON, ON. / August 5, 2018 – If you enjoy badminton, tennis or table tennis, then you’ll love Pickleball. Pickleball is a fun racquet sport that is perfect for people of all ages and skill levels. Pickleball United is a chance to try out the fastest growing sport in North America – before the national championship comes to Kingston.
On Friday August 24, 2018 the second annual Pickleball United Fundraising Tournament will be held at the Royal Kingston Curling Club (130 days Road). The day starts with registration and refreshments at 8:30am, along with coaching lessons for those who are new to the sport. Games begin at 9:30am and then participants break for a buffet-style lunch from 11:30 – 12:30pm. Play resumes from 12:30 – 3:00pm and wraps up by 4pm with the prize-giving ceremony. The event also includes a silent auction.
“I am thrilled that the second annual Pickleball event will provide community members with the opportunity to connect with one another in friendly competition, while making a difference in the lives of thousands of people right here in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox, and Addington.”
Tim Salmon, United Way KFL&A Pickleball United Committee Chair
Pickleball United was introduced last year, building on the success of the “United We Curl” event, organized by long time volunteer Bruce Jeffery. Now, with racquets instead of brooms in hand, participants enjoy a new experience while giving back to their community.
Racquets and balls will be provided to all participants. All those playing are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and running shoes. The curling club bar will be open and players can have access to refreshments throughout the day.
Registration is $50 a person or $100 for a team of two, which includes refreshments and lunch. (A tax receipt is available for a portion of the ticket price.) To register visit: https://pickleball-united-2018.eventbrite.ca
About Pickleball: Pickleball is a racquet sport combining elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis played with a polymer ball (similar to a whiffle ball) and paddles. The rules resemble tennis with some modifications and a game can be played as singles or doubles. Pickleball is becoming more popular amongst adults and seniors, although it was invented as a children’s backyard pastime approximately in the 1960’s. Pickleball can be played indoors or outdoors and is enjoyed by players in Canada, the United States, Finland, Spain, Belgium, India, France and New Zealand.
