United Way Centraide Canada (UWCC) has been actively engaging with the Federal Government over the need for this measure and with this announcement, United Way, the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) and Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) will work as partners in deploying these critical funds into communities across the country.
The fund is intended to support both urgent needs faced by vulnerable Canadians as well as supports to community service providers.
“This is a positive and welcomed announcement. All Canadians are being affected by COVID-19, but particularly those who are vulnerable and face systemic barriers. This is creating a much greater need for community-based social supports and United Way’s strong community networks have never been more relevant than in this pandemic. We look forward to learning more in the coming weeks and collaborating with partners, charities, and non-profit organizations via our respective networks to implement the Fund in our communities.”
Bhavana Varma, President and CEO, United Way Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington
Working with the Federal Government, details on this fund are still being finalized and communication on how the Fund will be activated and dispersed will be coming soon.
About the Emergency Community Support Fund
Led by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), the Federal Government is working with United Way Centraide Canada, Canadian Red Cross and Community Foundations of Canada to design the approach to disbursement of the Fund over the coming weeks.
The funding is intended to support frontline community-based service providers who serve vulnerable Canadians, including low-income seniors, women, children and youth, persons with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, refugees, Indigenous peoples and members of racialized communities.
