KINGSTON, ONT. / October 23, 2017 The Peculiar will release its new album at a concert in support of the United Way, 8 November at The Merchant Tap House in downtown Kingston. The event also features up-and-coming Kingston musician Nadia Pacey of Konig.
“We are thrilled to be a part of introducing talent to Kingston audiences,” says Rob Raike, chair of Next Gen, a group of young professionals aged 25 to 40 who are dedicated to bringing meaningful change to the community through their involvement with the United Way. “We invite everyone to join us for a night of new music and conversation.”
Conceived under the huge skies of Simcoe Island, near Kingston, The Peculiar’s first full-length album called “For X” combines bold, poetic lyrics with soaring electric guitar arrangements underpinned by unrelenting bass and drum rhythms. The collection’s songs form a work of exceptionally textured and atmospheric soundscapes.
“We’re excited to release the album in Kingston — the place two of us call home,” says Kingston-born Henry McGuire, The Peculiar’s singer and guitarist. “And we are even more excited to have an opportunity to bring people together in support of the United Way. We know what a difference the United Way makes to people of all ages — and we truly stand behind the organization’s life-changing work with homeless youth.”
The Peculiar’s unique sound is inspired by the diverse cultures of its four members. Vocalist-guitarist Henry McGuire hails from Kingston and nearby Simcoe Island. Drummer David Chidekel was born in Denmark. Bassist Michael ‘British’ Marshall is from England, but spent his teenage years in Kingston. And bassist Jason ‘Kato’ Burgos, comes from Bolivia.
“We are a community of weirdos and outsiders,” says Michael Marshall. “We’re an example of the way Canada unifies different cultures and different people. We are all comfortable here. We feel welcome here. We are an example of this country’s approach to multiculturalism.”
The Peculiar opens at 9:30 p.m. at The Merchant House, 6A Princess Street, in Kingston, followed at 11:30 p.m. by Konig.
Donations for the United Way will be accepted at the door. All proceeds go to the United Way campaign 2017. You can register for the event online on Eventbrite. Learn more about The Peculiar on their website https://thepeculiar.ca or check out the songs “folk” and “burly” on Soundcloud.
