United Way Campaign brings community together to support local needs
KINGSTON, ON (Nov. 29, 2013) KFL&A residents set their 15th straight fundraising record this year, raising $3,453,725. The 2013 Campaign Chair Lori MacDonald, Ontario Regional Deputy Commissioner for the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), made the announcement this morning in front of 500 volunteers at the 2013 Campaign Touchdown Breakfast at the Ambassador Conference Resort.
The funds raised in the 12-week region-wide campaign represent a 1% increase over the $3,418,000 goal. The United Way Campaign raises funds annually, with the bulk coming from employees in workplaces and individual donors.
This year, CSC gave the United Way an opportunity to offer public tours of Kingston Penitentiary. The tours contributed $171,540 to this year’s campaign, bringing the total raised in 2013 to over $3.6 million. This amounts to a 6% increase over goal. The additional funding will go toward programs that address youth homelessness, an area identified by the United Way as a key issue facing KFL&A.
“The long-standing success of these campaigns is a testament to the spirit of giving in our community and to the belief in the value of agencies supported by the United Way,” said MacDonald.
“I’d like to thank the thousands of volunteers who come together every year to support the campaign,” says United Way President and CEO Bhavana Varma. “I’m always so impressed with their creativity, commitment and their motivation to make a difference in the community where they live, work and volunteer.”
Although the 2013 Campaign has ended, the United Way continues to accept donations as workplaces continue with fundraising events and individuals plan their giving to coincide with the holidays.
All of the money raised by the United Way will be used to provide immediate support and services used by people in the Kingston area every day. To assist in this effort, local volunteers will carefully review funding applications and make distribution recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors in the coming weeks.
