15th Annual Day of Caring on June 5th
KINGSTON, ON (June 2, 2015) – On Friday, June 5th, United Way Day of Caring volunteers will come together for a unique opportunity. Teams will work together and tackle light construction, maintenance and gardening at United Way funded agencies across Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington.
United Way Day of Caring is an opportunity for volunteers to connect with their community. It’s a win-win for all; agencies get much needed projects completed and volunteers get to learn about their community through a hands-on experience. Participants take on light construction, gardening and maintenance tasks and gain behind-the-scenes insight into the work of agencies.
This year 204 volunteers from 29 workplaces have signed up to spend the day at 25 different sites.
The United Way Day of Caring volunteer committee has been hard at work since early this year, identifying projects, recruiting volunteer teams from workplaces, organizing equipment and pursuing material sponsors. Committee chair, Michele Finney, says, “The Day of Caring gives people the power to make a difference in someone’s life by connecting with the local community. The projects range from small to large, and when combined, they refresh and update our local agencies, improving the environment for people accessing programs.”
Day of Caring was introduced to KFL&A in 2001. Since then, 12,500 volunteer hours have been invested in 295 projects. Day of Caring showcases our communities’ volunteer efforts and promotes the spirit of caring.’
The event is sponsored by Empire Life, Hydro One, Wilkinson & Company, COSTCO, Tim Hortons (J.E. Agnew), INVISTA, Home Depot and numerous local businesses that donate supplies. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. with a light breakfast at St. Lawrence College, Kingston campus, Portsmouth Avenue and King Street. Teams of volunteers will work on projects through the morning and wrap up with a barbecue at the Junior Ranks Mess, CFB Kingston at 2:00 p.m.
