KINGSTON, Ont. (April 11, 2016) –As part of National Volunteer week, the United Way Volunteer Centre is challenging high school students throughout the region to volunteer for at least three hours over six weeks to “Change The World” as part of the Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge. All hours will count toward high school community involvement activity credits.
National Volunteer Week takes place from April 10 to April 16 this year.
High school students can participate in the challenge by committing to a volunteer activity between April 10 and May 23, 2016 and logging the hours they’ve volunteered. This year, the United Way Volunteer Centre is targeting a goal of 3,000 youth volunteers for a total of 15,000 hours in the KFLA community.
Students in KFLA have participated in the challenge since it was first introduced here in 2012 and have exceeded local targets every year. In 2015, 3,390 youth volunteered for 20,326 hours, both of which were new records. Over the first 4 years of the challenge, 9,601 students have volunteered an impressive 46,430 hours in our community.
“This challenge has proven to be a wonderful way to introduce more high school students to the benefits of volunteering,” says United Way President and CEO Bhavana Varma. “It’s great to see the number of students and hours increase each year.”
Students who are already engaged in volunteer activities can take part in the challenge by tracking their hours during the six week period and submitting them to their Student Services Department. Students who would like to participate but aren’t affiliated with a volunteer activity, can visit their Student Services Department for information about events in their school.
The United Way Volunteer Centre also promotes volunteer opportunities in the community at https://www.unitedwaykfla.ca/volunteer-centre/ or contact volunteer@unitedwaykfla.ca for more details.
This initiative is made possible with funding support from the government of Ontario.
