KINGSTON, ON (June 6, 2016) – On Friday, June 10th, United Way Day of Caring volunteers will come together for a unique opportunity. Teams will work together and tackle light construction, maintenance and gardening at community agencies, including United Way funded agencies across Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington.
United Way Day of Caring is an opportunity for volunteers to connect with their community. It’s a win-win for all; agencies get much needed projects completed and volunteers get to learn about their community through a hands-on experience. Participants take on light construction, gardening and maintenance tasks and gain behind-the-scenes insight into the work of agencies.
This year over 220 volunteers, making up 27 teams from 24 workplaces have signed up to spend the day at 25 different sites.
The United Way Day of Caring volunteer committee has been hard at work since early this year, identifying projects, recruiting volunteer teams from workplaces, organizing equipment and pursuing material sponsors. Committee chair, Michele Finney, says, “The Day of Caring gives workplace teams and volunteers the chance to give back to local agencies that are meeting immediate needs within our local community every day. Whether the teams are gardening, painting, or doing repairs around the office, each project goes a long way in refreshing agency premises and improving the environment for people accessing programs.”
Day of Caring was introduced to KFL&A in 2001. Since then, 13,300 volunteer hours have been invested in 320 projects. Day of Caring showcases our communities’ volunteer efforts and promotes the spirit of caring.’
The event is sponsored by Assurant Solutions, Empire Life, Hydro One, INVISTA, Tim Hortons (J.E. Agnew), Wilkinson & Company, Home Depot and numerous local businesses that donate supplies. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. with a rally at St. Lawrence College, Kingston campus, Portsmouth Avenue and King Street. Teams of volunteers will work on projects through the morning and wrap up at the Junior Ranks Mess, CFB Kingston at 2:00 p.m.
