KINGSTON, ONT./March 27, 2017 – The City of Kingston is now seeking nominees for its annual Civic Awards, which recognize the significant community contributions of outstanding Kingstonians.
“In 2017, as we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, we are happy to announce the introduction of a bursary program for the Mayor’s Awards for Youth Volunteerism,” says Mayor Bryan Paterson. “The bursary program aims to provide financial support to outstanding Kingston youth as they pursue academics, a post-secondary education, start a business or enhance their volunteer efforts.”
The bursary program has been made possible in partnership with the United Way of KFL&A using a small portion of the funds received from the net proceeds of the 2016 Kingston Penitentiary tours to create the ongoing bursary program.
Youth Award recipients will receive a bursary with a monetary value catered to each category, as outlined below:
- Grades 5-8 – $750 to be used toward a school project of their choice or design
- Grades 9-12 – $1,500
- Post-secondary youth (up to age 24) – $2,000
The intended use of the bursary monies is to support youth award winners in their academic endeavors for the Grade 9-12 and post-secondary categories. The Grade 5-8 category is to support a project of the winners choosing or design through their school.
