KINGSTON, ON (June 5, 2017) – On Friday, June 9th, teams will come together for a special day of volunteering. They will work together in groups and tackle light construction, maintenance and gardening projects at United Way funded community agencies across Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington.
United Way Day of Caring is an opportunity for volunteers to connect with their community. It’s a win-win for all; agencies get much needed projects completed and volunteers get to learn about the local impact of their donations through a hands-on experience.
This year over 200 volunteers, making up 26 teams from 20 workplaces have signed up to spend the day at 24 sites.
The United Way Day of Caring volunteer committee has been hard at work since early this year, identifying projects, recruiting volunteer teams from workplaces, organizing equipment and pursuing material sponsors. Committee chair, Michele Finney, says, “The Day of Caring gives workplace teams and volunteers the chance to give back to local agencies for all the good work they do in our community. They get to see where their money is going, and how that donation is helping agencies meet the immediate needs for our community every day. Encouraging volunteerism and instilling in workplaces the power to give is so important in growing a strong, healthy and connected community.”
Day of Caring was introduced to KFL&A in 2001. Since then, 14,400 volunteer hours have been invested in 345 projects.
The event is sponsored by Assurant Solutions, Lafarge Canada Cement, Hydro One, INVISTA, Tim Hortons (J.E. Agnew), Wilkinson & Company, Home Depot and numerous local businesses that donate supplies. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. with a rally at CORCAN (1484 Centennial Rd). Teams of volunteers tackle projects all morning and wrap up with a BBQ at the Warrant Officer’s & Sergeant’s Mess at CFB Kingston (18 Craftsman Boulevard) at 2:00 p.m.
