Goal is to increase awareness and provide tools for issues faced by local youth
KINGSTON, ON / Thursday, April 19, 2018 – Organized by the Youth Out Loud Kingston & Area Youth Council and the United Way, the fourth annual Youth Summit will take place on Friday, April 20th, from 10 am. to 1:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall, City Hall. The event is sponsored by RBC Foundation.
The Youth Council, supported and coordinated through the United Way, is made up of local youth who provide input into local initiatives, including youth homelessness and youth employment. The Council has planned the summit to raise awareness about the issues faced by youth in our community, especially those that could potentially lead to homelessness.
“Youth have told us how important it is to bring them together around issues they face”, says Bhavana Varma, President & CEO, United Way of KFL&A. “We appreciate their insight, leadership and input in identifying topics and facilitating workshops that will help youth deal with some of the issues faced by them or someone they know.”
The summit is coordinated through the United Way and its Youth Council, supported by local school boards, youth-serving agencies and the City of Kingston. More than 60 youth from local high schools, agency clients and from the community have confirmed participation.
Youth Council members will facilitate practical, interactive and fun breakout sessions with local youth serving agencies on topics they have chosen and feel are important to all youth. This year’s topics include:
- Empathy & Conflict Resolution: Youth Diversion
- Substance Use: Kairos
- Civic Engagement: – Mayor’s Youth Council & members of Y2K
- Interview & Communication Skills: KEYS
- Financial Literacy: Resolve Counselling Centre
