5th Annual Youth Homelessness Summit in Kingston

Summit aims to increase awareness and provide tools for issues faced by local youth

KINGSTON, ON / Wednesday, April 17, 2019 – Organized by the United Way’s Youth Council, the fifth annual Youth Summit will take place on Thursday, April 18th, from 10:30 a.m.to 1:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall at Kingston City Hall. The event is sponsored by RBC Foundation, and organized in partnership with agencies, the City of Kingston and local school boards.

The Youth Council, supported and coordinated through the United Way, is made up of local youth who provide input into local initiatives, including youth homelessness and youth employment. The Council has planned the summit to raise awareness about the issues faced by youth in our community, especially those that could potentially lead to homelessness.

“As part of increasing awareness and focusing on prevention, youth have told us how important it is to bring them together around issues they and their friends face”, says Bhavana Varma, President & CEO, United Way of KFL&A.  “We appreciate their insight and leadership in identifying topics and then facilitating workshops that will help youth deal with some of the issues faced by them or someone they know.”

Youth Council members will facilitate practical, interactive and fun breakout sessions with local youth serving agencies on topics they have chosen and feel are important to all youth.

This year’s topics include:

  • Empathy & Conflict Resolution: Youth Diversion
  • Substance Use: Kairos
  • Interview & Communication Skills: KEYS
  • Financial Literacy: Resolve Counselling Centre
  • Mental Health: United Way Youth Council
