FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
The United Way KFLA 2018 Campaign raises a record $3,564,000
A community-wide effort that will change lives locally
KINGSTON, ON (Nov. 29, 2018) The United Way of KFL&A announced today that the annual campaign goal has been surpassed, raising $3,564,000.
Today’s announcement includes money in to date as well as donations that are not in yet but traditionally come in December. United Way will continue to accept donations as workplaces wrap up fundraising events and individuals plan their giving to coincide with the holidays.
The announcement was made this morning in front of 500 volunteers at the Campaign Touchdown Breakfast hosted and sponsored by Ambassador Hotel & Conference Centre.
“From the outset the goal was not simply a target to meet but a number the entire community was determined to surpass, and they did just that,” said Campaign Chair Fred Godbille. “Everyone who played a role and supported this year’s United Way campaign should be very proud.”
These funds raised will start being distributed locally almost immediately. United Way volunteers will carefully review funding applications and make recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors in the coming weeks. Some of the funds have also been directed by donors to other registered charities.
At the breakfast, Mayor Bryan Paterson announced the amount raised from the Kingston Penitentiary Tours, which is not included in the amount announced for the campaign. These tours continue to draw thousands of visitors from across Canada and beyond. After another very successful tour season St. Lawrence Parks Commission, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada and the City of Kingston, will write a cheque for $500,000 (which represents 50% of the 2018 tour profits) towards the United Way’s youth homelessness initiatives.
“We are delighted to partner with the United Way and see the immediate impact of these funds locally,” says Geoff Waycik, Director of Historic Sites with St. Lawrence Parks Commission. “It is very moving to hear the stories of youth who have been directly assisted as a result of these funds.”
