KINGSTON, ON (September 8, 2017) – In front of a packed crowd at the annual kickoff breakfast sponsored by the Ambassador Conference Resort Centre and Bourgon Construction, the local United Way announced a goal of $3,501,000, $50,000 higher than last year’s goal.
Pat Murphy, 2017 United Way of KFL&A campaign chair announced the region-wide goal in front of 500 United Way supporters and volunteers. “The funds raised by our community stay in our community,” said Murphy. “It is amazing to see the generosity of people, year after year, as we work together and, not only reach the goal, but surpass it. It is an incredible honour it is to lead the charge and I have no doubt we will surpass our goal once again in 2017.”
This year’s campaign will focus on sharing the United Way story with donors, especially in the workplace. “These stories help people understand the impact of their donation and how they change lives locally,” says United Way President and CEO Bhavana Varma. “The United Way campaign brings people together with common purpose, raising funds to support local needs.”
To demonstrate the power of the local community’s collective efforts, volunteers at each table read cards that demonstrated how every donation makes a difference. Last year, United Way funded agencies served 55,000 people in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington.
The campaign runs for the next 12 weeks and wraps up on November 30th.
“Although we focus on a 12-week campaign, the United Way never sleeps,” Murphy added. “Our community needs your help day after day,” he reminded people. Every dollar counts.” 70% of funds are raised through workplace campaigns and the balance is donated by people in the community and community events.
